dolo needed to design a Product Manager friendly data visualization tool that:

Made SQL visual + friendly for a non-technical PM

Was robust, but not too complicated and weighty

Pulled disparate data sources together

CURRENT TOOLS

PMs used a huge variety of tools to do what they needed, but still saw a gap in what they needed

WHAT PMs LIKED & WANTED

LOVED the intuitive, step-by-step interface of Notion (“building blocks!”) and the experimenting capacity of Jupyter notebooks

Lots of iterating to figure out how much data the user needed to see at a time and the best way to incorporate “jupyter notebook” blocks

BRANDING

Users LOVED the “coziness” of Notion - and made it feel less overwhelming.

Lots of paper textures and the neutral colors gave it a “scratchpad” feel, which brought it back to the good ‘ol journaling days, and less pressure to “mess it up”.

LEARNINGS & NEXT STEPS

Data visualization is tough - how do you know if you have “enough”?

In this instance, defining our target user was critical, and made it a lot easier for user testing AND sales.
